As a cycling enthusiast and local resident, I have had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful trails and roads of central Kentucky. And one thing I have learned is that there is no better way to experience the region's natural beauty than by combining two favorite activities - biking and picnicking. Central Kentucky is a cyclist's paradise, with its rolling hills, scenic routes, and charming small towns. And in this article, I will share with you some of the best spots for a picnic while biking in this picturesque region.
The Legacy Trail
The Legacy Trail is a 12-mile paved trail that connects downtown Lexington to the charming town of Georgetown. This popular trail is not only frequented by cyclists but also by walkers, runners, and rollerbladers. The well-maintained trail offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. One of my favorite picnic spots on the Legacy Trail is at Coldstream Park. This park has plenty of picnic tables and benches where you can take a break from your ride and enjoy a packed lunch. With restrooms and water fountains available, it's a convenient stop for cyclists.
The Bourbon Trail
The Bourbon Trail is a must-do for any visitor to central Kentucky. This 200-mile scenic route takes you through some of the most famous bourbon distilleries in the world. But did you know that this trail is also perfect for a bike ride? One of my favorite sections of the Bourbon Trail for cycling is between Versailles and Midway. This 10-mile stretch offers stunning views of horse farms, rolling hills, and quaint towns. And what better way to experience this picturesque route than by stopping for a picnic at the beautiful Woodford Reserve Distillery? The distillery has a designated picnic area where you can enjoy your lunch while taking in the views of the surrounding countryside.
The Red River Gorge
The Red River Gorge is a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers, but it is also a great spot for cyclists. The winding roads and challenging climbs make for an exhilarating ride, and the stunning views of the gorge make it all worth it. One of my favorite picnic spots in the Red River Gorge is at Natural Bridge State Resort Park. This park has several picnic areas, but my favorite is at Hemlock Lodge. From here, you can enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in the breathtaking views of the natural bridge and the surrounding forest.
The Shaker Village
The Shaker Village in Harrodsburg is a historic landmark that offers a glimpse into the lives of the Shakers, a religious community that settled in this area in the 19th century. The village has over 3,000 acres of land, including hiking and biking trails. One of my favorite biking routes at the Shaker Village is the 10-mile loop that takes you through rolling hills, farmland, and forests. Along this route, you will come across several picnic tables and benches where you can stop for a break and enjoy a picnic lunch. The peaceful surroundings and beautiful scenery make this spot perfect for a relaxing picnic.
The Kentucky River Palisades
The Kentucky River Palisades is a scenic area along the Kentucky River that offers stunning views of towering cliffs and lush greenery. This area is also home to several hiking and biking trails that are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. One of my favorite spots for a picnic while biking in the Kentucky River Palisades is at Lock and Dam #9.This area has a designated picnic area with tables and grills, making it a great spot for a cookout. After enjoying your meal, you can take a short hike to the overlook and enjoy the breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding cliffs. The Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum
The Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum in Versailles is a popular attraction for train enthusiasts, but it is also a great spot for cyclists. The museum has a 2-mile paved trail that runs alongside the railroad tracks, offering beautiful views of the countryside. One of my favorite picnic spots at the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum is at the picnic shelter near the train depot. From here, you can watch the trains go by while enjoying your lunch. The museum also has a small cafe where you can grab a quick bite before continuing your ride.
